Hanna gives up her big dream of competitive swimming in the GDR and flees across the Baltic Sea in the summer of 1989 with her best friend Andreas, who has been targeted by the state. Fifty kilometers of water separate them from freedom. And only a thin, connecting cord around her wrist saves her from absolute loneliness.

At the Max Ophüls Preis film festival, "Jenseits der blauen Grenze" received the Audience Award for Best movie and the Best Young Actor Award for Willi Geitmann and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
